From Coal and Lumber Smith Lumber Company has been a staple in Valley City since 1923. It has grown and diversified to meet the areas needs. We Started downtown serving as the local coal distribution station and lumberyard. As time went on and coal became less used, Smith Lumber Company evolved into a contractor lumberyard. In 2014, Tim Durheim Purchased Smith Lumber Company with a plan to build a new facility on the site of the old stockyard on the east edge of town. His intention was to expand into hardware and carry a larger selection of building materials on hand, with a vision of becoming a "one stop shop for your projects." The new store opened in December of 2014. Since then, Smith Lumber Company has seen great growth with adding a rental center, Winkler Structure dealer, greenhouse/garden center and most recently becoming a Husquarna dealer and small engine repair. As we evolved to serve the communities needs, we quickly outgrew our store! To meet the customer requests we completed a major expansion Today's Needs Meeting of over 11,000 square feet in the spring of 2022. This allowed for us to complete our plumbing and electrical departments. We also added new departments, like work wear, farm and ranch supplies, toys, games and house wares. Currently, we are constructing a new and larger greenhouse. This will open just in time for fresh Christmas trees and holiday decor.
